How it works
SmartShift Rewards turns your water heater into a smart device, activating it when electricity prices are lower. Your water stays hot until you’re ready to use it, and you can avoid paying the highest electricity prices which can help you save on your electricity bill. You’ll also receive a one-time $50 enrollment bonus when you sign up, and continue to earn additional rewards for every month you participate.
SmartShift Rewards is easy to enroll in, and easy to use. You’ll find step-by-step instructions and checklists to help. And don’t worry, you can opt-out or pause your participation at any time, like when you have family or friends visiting.
- Participation Rewards are paid every six months for the total number of months you successfully participated.
- Participation Rewards and Enrollment Bonus will be paid in the form of a gift card that will be emailed to you.
- To qualify for monthly participation reward, your water heater must be connected to SmartShift Rewards for at least 14 days during the month.

Am I Eligible?
You’re eligible for SmartShift Rewards if you’re an SCE or Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) customer in SCE service area, and:
- Have at least one electric water heater* – either a heat pump water heater or an electric resistance water heater
- Are currently on, or agree to switch to, an SCE Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan, which helps you take advantage of the lowest available rate
* A Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) is required for all heat pump water heaters. Your water heater will need to have the ability to connect to WiFi or cellular service, either built into the equipment or through an added device that the program can provide at no cost.
What are demand response (DR) and Time-of-use (TOU) rates?
Energy prices vary throughout the day and when demand is at its peak (typically between 4:00pm to 9:00pm) the cost of electricity increases. The combination of Demand Response and TOU rate plans can help you take advantage of lower energy prices.
